It all starts with a plan!

After years of inconsistent training due to injury and illness, how am I going to start training? First and foremost I’m happy to be able to train!  As much as I want to race again, just being able to train is a blessing.

I have to gain some weight and overall strength before I set out to start running, cycling, and swimming consistently.  My strength training regimen will have a have a focus on injury prevention.  Having had many injuries in the past, I know that correcting some imbalances will be necessary to preventing further injury.  Thankfully, I have many good friends in the sports medicine field and they are helping me to achieve this goal.

As for my long-term goals:

In 2011 they have the Transplant Games http://www.wtgf.org/events.asp?section=0001000100160001&itemid=432
I would like to compete in the Men’s 1500 Meter Race and Men’s Cycling Time Trial.  The main focus will be the 1500 meters during training.

Some other goals would be to get back participating/competing in some triathlons in 2011.

The goals are set, time to do the work!

Starting from scratch is tough!

Unfortunately, many athletes have had to start training again after injury or illness.  It is never fun.  I have been there myself, but this time is definitely different.  After being sick for the past three years, it is going to be a long journey back to training.

I can truly say to newbie endurance athletes that have never run a mile, biked a mile, or swam 100 meters, that this is hard work!  I am now in the same boat and its taking a lot of patience, but as I know proper progression is the key. I have had some injuries in the past, both in my knees and hips.  Therefore, I am focusing on the 2011 season so that I can progress my training slowly and consistently.

Everyone is asking the question “Coach what are your goals”?  In my next blog I will have my goals on paper and a plan of action set!

Coming back from the dead…literally!

As of April 09, 2010 it was one year since my kidney transplant!  It’s hard to believe that a year and a half ago I did not have any kidneys, a piece of my intestine was removed, and I almost died twice!  You have to love genetics! Some of you might be surprised to read this.  To get caught up on the whole story you can find out more about it here:  http://blog.nj.com/southjerseylife/2009/04/a_special_bond.html

Now its time to get back to business and train!
